In response to questions about vaccinations in KUTERRA salmon:
For clarity, Kuterra uses no antibiotics, no pesticides and no hormones. Kuterra does buy smolts that have been vaccinated by the suppliers against four common fish diseases: furunculosis, vibriosis, infectious hematopoietic necrosis and bacterial kidney disease. Vaccines are important in preventing diseases that could require treatment with antibiotics. Antibiotics can produce antibiotic resistance, and can spread through the environment.
Kuterra has sourced smolts from two different suppliers. Some of the earliest batches experienced variable growth conditions in the early days of operations. Operations have evolved and we are in the process of updating our site to reflect current practices. We apologize for not being precise on our website.
Aside from variability related to the start-up of the facility and operations, the recirculating aquaculture system at Kuterra ensures fish grow free of stresses common to Atlantic salmon grown in the ocean. Such stresses include plankton blooms, predators, sealice, weather and environmental conditions. We continue to optimize the growth environment for our fish to achieve the best conditions possible.
Kuterra regularly gives presentations, and also reports progress at the ongoing series of Aquaculture Innovation Workshops. Kuterra information is publically available among the links found here (pdf).
